Marseilles. Romance of Dumas
A marvellous Marseilles, the source of warmth, as Alexandre Dumas said, has always been attractive for travelers. Once the sailors were the most frequent visitors. And in the beginning of 13th century the chapel was built there, soon it got the name - “church of sailors”. It was once thought that if you pray and “give a present” to Notre-Dame de la Garde, depicted on the basilica, the voyage will be successful and safe. Today the church is popular not only with prayers of sea favor, but also with the requests of students passing the exams or of lovers.
Though the Prado street holds the first place in length and width, the Canebière is still the most famous one, it serves a place of different performances, this street is also mentioned in many songs. The Canebière comes to the Old Port and a huge fish market. The café of the local football club “Marseilles” is situated alongside.
If you wish to see picturesque sights of the city not just on video or photos, you should take a ferry walk. Except the sightseeing, this trip will be memorized by the visit of the famous Château d’If.
Another curiosity of Marseilles is a game called «pétanque».The game may seem rather strange for “uninitiated”, but the local think it is a great pastime.
