Kastoria The City of Furs
Fresh mountain air, painfully beautiful Lake Orestiada, buildings with exquisite architectural elements, shopping malls straight out of a shopaholic dream… Kastoria is, no doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in Greece as well as a world-famous shopping destination.
The word “kastor” means “beaver”, and it is no coincidence that the city is named after the animal. Kastoria is an international centre of fur trade. People from all over the globe flock to the city with the purpose of buying a beaver fur coat or two. On Lake Orestiada you may not only see beavers in their natural habitat, but also take photos of the picturesque area with its distinct flora and fauna. One will definitely find something of interest there, whether it is a place for meditation, a water ride or an open-air dancefloor.
Some people call Kastoria “the City of Churches”, since there are more than 70 churches and cathedrals in it. One should definitely pay a visit to one of them and ask for divine guidance and protection. People say, gods hear well those who pray in Kastoria.
There are a lot of other places of interest in the city. For example, the Byzantine Museum that hosts collections of ancient icons. Or the Theatre of Kastoria, the repertoire of which includes both classic and contemporary plays. In summer, performance takes place in the open air.
